Celebrating our Elders’ and the KJ Martu Cup

It was a day filled with pride, laughter, and unforgettable moments as Martu from Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu, Kunawarritji, and Newman communities gathered in Parnngurr for the Elders' Celebration and KJ Martu Cup. One of the day's highlights was the well-deserved recognition of Elder Muuki Taylor, who received the prestigious Order of Australia Medal. Muuki's lifelong commitment and contributions to the Martu community and KJ are extraordinary; this award stands as a testament to his unwavering spirit and enduring legacy.

During his acceptance speech, Muuki humbly acknowledged that the award was not just for him but earned by everyone. He emphasised the collective effort and dedication that has made this achievement possible and encouraged all to continue KJ's work in supporting Martu to keep culture strong, Country healthy and build strong and sustainable communities.

The day was filled with activities, many showcasing the rich culture and traditions of the Martu people. From damper making to piti (collection bowl) carrying, spear making to spear throwing, wheel brace throwing to tug of war, watermelon eating to water balloon activities, there was something for everyone. The competition for the KJ Martu Cup brought out the competitive spirit in the participants as they showcased their skills and determination while fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie. Parnngurr took the trophy as the overall winner, with Punmu coming in second and Jigalong in third place.

As the sun set, the celebration continued with a BBQ and performance by Martu band, Wild Dingo, ensuring that the festivities lasted well into the evening.

KJ would like to extend a sincere thank you to all Martu who came and participated in the event. Special recognition goes to the KJ Martu teams and staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes. From preparing the campsite and facilities to keeping everyone well-fed and hydrated, their efforts were instrumental in making the event a resounding success.

A heartfelt thank you goes to the Parnngurr Community for hosting the event and providing a warm and welcoming space for the celebration.

We would also like to thank the Newman Women's Shelter for organising engaging activities for the kids, Martumili Artists for providing a painting station that allowed Martu to express our creativity, Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service for their valuable medical support, EPIS Pilbara for bringing out many respected Elders and RAWA, Parnngurr and Jigalong Community schools for bringing along the kids to be part of the celebration.

We were honoured to have the presence of His Excellency the Honourable Chris Dawson (Governor) and his wife, Mrs Dawson, Commissioner Col Blanch, Superintendent Gailene Hamilton (Pilbara District Superintendent), KJ co-Patron Fred Chaney and his wife Angela Chaney and the WA and Jigalong Police.

These dignitaries' and agencies' support and involvement demonstrated the wider recognition and appreciation for the KJ and the Martu community's achievements.

We look forward to many more gatherings that celebrate our achievements together, honour our Elders, and strengthen community bonds.
