Family Trees

Family trees are fundamental to Martu identity and to their connection to specific areas of country. KJ has combined and refined genealogical information collected between the 1950s and 2000s, creating probably the most comprehensive genealogical record of any Aboriginal group in Australia.

Most Martu families have been traced back two generations prior to first contact with whitefellas. This information is added to the Puntuku (family tree) database. The enthusiasm and energy shown by people to record their connections with the 'desert mob' are overwhelmingly positive.

For anyone seeking more information about their Martu family trees or stories, we encourage you to contact the Country & Culture team through the KJ office number (08) 9129 5100.

Genealogical information — that is linked to information on family connection to country — provides a permanent source of reliable data for future generations.
