Women + Families Program in full swing

Our new Women & Families program (WFP) is in full swing, and staff and families are doing it the fun way!

Working with Julie Christine from World Vision, staff are using the Abecedarian Approach to early childhood education: an evidence-based program that integrates basic principles of human learning and development into a fun, affordable and effective approach to early childhood education.

Over three days, Julie took staff through various learning games, familiarising them with resources, and taught staff how to engage in conversational reading, as well as singing as an approach to learning.

The WFP team also received an on-country visit which brought together multiple generations and groups — school kids joined, young children, young and older women, and rangers.

The school, rangers and WFP all ventured out where kids dug for minyarra: a small sweet bush onion that is delicious roasted in the coals of the fire. It can be harvested from river beds, living just under the sand.

Participants in the WFP learned from rangers: camp prep, packing, vehicle checks, camp kitchen and sanitation set-up. People familiarised themselves with audio recorders should they want to record future lessons. Supporting each other and sharing knowledge has no bounds for Martu.
